Review: Audi A1

If you are in the market for a premium supermini, but aren’t a fan of Mini’s retro styling, the Audi A1 is an excellent alternative.

The A1 feels a bit like a more luxurious version of a Volkswagen Polo, which is no surprise considering it uses a number of the same parts. There are three trims to choose from: the SE, the Sport and the S Line, as well as endless optional fitted extras.

Performance

The 1.0-litre petrol produces 94bhp and gives a decent performance for an entry-level engine, although, if you’re anticipating regular long journeys, the 123bhp, 1.4-litre petrol will be better suited. There is also a 1.6-litre diesel available. You get a good sense of control in Audi A1 cars and a reasonably smooth drive with the standard SE trim.

Interior

The Audi A1 displays the German manufacturer’s famously solid craftsmanship both inside and out. Interior materials are high quality and you get more equipment than you do with some rivals like Mini cars. The driving position is good, although there isn’t an abundance of room in the cabin or boot.

Price

Unsurprisingly, Audi A1 cars are at the higher end of the price scale for compact hatchbacks, and the quality of materials and build justifies this. The price can easily creep up though with a wealth of expensive upgrades on offer. The model does, however, hold its value remarkably well.

The most basic A1 costs around £15,000 to £16,000 but can reach double that with all of the extras on offer, whereas used Audi A1 cars can be found starting from £5,000 to £8,000, with the price increasing depending on the trim level.
