Should I Buy an SUV or a Crossover?

If you are not entirely sure what the difference is between an SUV and a crossover, you are not alone. Typically appealing to buyers who are in the market for a family car, both are more spacious and practical than your average hatchback, but there are subtle disparities.

The main difference between the two vehicle types is that SUVs use the same chassis as a truck, whereas crossovers use the same chassis as a car. This means that body and frame of an SUV will be separate, while the crossover platform is unibody.

SUVs

SUVs (Sports Utility Vehicles) are historically the vehicles of outdoor enthusiasts but more and more, we are seeing them become the choice of the everyday driver. This means that their design is just as focussed on performance and style as practicality and durability, and this is partially where the confusion between SUV and crossover arises. SUVs are designed to go off-road, with four-wheel drive and suitable suspension options.

Examples include the Land Rover Freelander and the Audi Q5.

Crossovers

Crossovers have a lower ride height than SUVs and are more likely to send power to the front wheels, with all-wheel drive options available. Like SUVs, they are spacious and tough, but they are usually more efficient and offer a nimbler, car-like driving experience.

Examples include the Nissan Qashqai, the Nissan Juke and Honda CR-V.

Which is Right for You?

If you are the adventurous type who wants to go off-road, or tow other vehicles like a boat or a caravan, an SUV is a smart choice. Likewise, if you live in the country or an isolated area which is badly affected by snow or other harsh weather conditions, an SUV with a tough, all-wheel drive system is probably a wise choice.

On the other hand, if you live in the city, driving a big, heavy SUV might be a hassle, and if you are just looking for a bit more space and reliability without having to sacrifice efficiency, a crossover is the option for you.
