Best Drives in Kendal and the Lake District

When you pick up your used car from Whitestone Garage, what better way to test out your new wheels than to go for a long drive? From our site in Blackburn, make your way onto the M6 and head North to the mountainous Lake District. This region offers some of the most scenic driving routes in the UK.

Ambleside, Keswick and Ullswater

The drive from Ambleside to Keswick and Ullswater will take you around several of the beautiful lakes the area has to offer. Ambleside is a popular tourist town with plenty of things to do, and the drive from here to Keswick will take you past Dove Cottage and Wordsworth Museum, Grasmere Village, Station Coppice Viewpoint and Thirlmere Dam, where you can enjoy stunning views of the lake.

Keswick is a bustling, pretty little town that is well worth stopping at. As you continue your drive, you will pass Castlerigg Stone Circle, which dates back to 2500BC. The route will also take you to Aira Force, one of the tallest waterfalls in the Lake Dstrict. Heading back to your starting point, you will pass Brotherswater Lake and Kirkstone Pass, where you can end your journey on a high, the highest point you can take a car in the Lake District in fact!

Keswick, Rosthwaite and Buttermere

From Keswick to Rosthwaite, you’ll come across the picturesque Calfclose Bay, a fantastic view of Derwent Water and Lordore Falls. You will then follow Derwent River.

If you feel inclined to stretch your legs in between all the driving, Rosthwaite is the perfect place to enjoy a walk, with magnificent views of the Lake District to take in. On your way to Buttermere, you’ll take Honister Pass, home to Honister Slate Mine. Surrounded by mountains and lakes, Buttermere is a beautiful village.

Ambleside, Windermere and Hawkshead

Windermere is the largest lake in, not only the Lake District, but also the whole of England, and this route will take you around the immense body of water. It goes from Ambleside into the town of Windermere, which offers shops, cafes, pubs and The World of Beatrix Potter.

You will pass Fell Foot Park, Lakeside and Hill Top, once the home of Beatrix Potter, until coming to Hawkshead Village, which is ideal for tourists. As you complete the circuit back to Ambleside, it is definitely worth stopping to see Wray Castle, on Windermere Lake’s shores.
