Review: BMW 1 Series
BMW are renowned for their exceptional driving dynamics in every car they produce. The BMW 1 Series is no exception, with even their frugal 116D model featuring a sporty low-slung seating position and exceptional steering feedback.
Available in both 3 and 5 door models, you’re sure to find a great 1 Series suited to you. BMW offer a great range of trims, from simple SE to the exclusive Shadow Edition, there’s something for everyone.
Driving and Technology
BMW’s rear-wheel-drive setup enables their cars to corner far quicker than any of the brand’s rivals and paired with its short and snappy gear changes, the BMW 1 Series will leave many cars in its price range lagging behind. Standard equipment is generous too, 16-inch alloy wheels, DAB digital radio, keyless start, automatic headlights and wipers and 6.5-inch colour screen all give the 1 Series a premium feel in the market and offers great value for money.
Interior
Despite BMW’s sports-orientated background, the 1 Series excels in many other areas. There’s more boot and interior space than in previous models, drive modes enable a range of driving styles and the overall build quality has vastly improved. Throughout the cabin you’re aware that you’re in a premium level hatchback, soft leathers and a lack of flimsy plastic make this car worth its money.
Engine
There is a total of eight engines available for the 1 Series, however the tuning of each can be a bit confusing. All of the diesel engines are fast, economical and very smooth compared to similar powertrains. Even with the über-economical 116d EfficientDynamics, offering 83.1mpg, you’re still able to have fun in the rear biased hatch. For those looking for a pocket rocket, the M140i is an excellent choice. It offers all of the performance of its rivals like the Audi RS3 and Mercedes A45 AMG, but for a relatively affordable price.
Used BMW 1 Series prices are at a great level at the moment, pick yours up today!
