Review: BMW 3 Series

The BMW 3 Series is a long-standing champion of the compact executive class, and while its major rivals have raised the standards in more recent years, this popular car manages to stay at the top of the pile.

Driving Experience

This has to be the area in which the BMW 3 Series excels most. There are a range of engines on offer, from basic three- and four-cylinders to ferocious six-cylinder 3.0-litre petrol and diesel options. Excellent control, well-weighted steering and firm grip makes this vehicle highly enjoyable to drive and arguably, it is top of its class for handling.

Space and Comfort

The BMW 3 Series provides plenty of headroom and legroom, which is admirable, considering it is a compact executive, and one of the shortest models in its class. Although, if space if a priority for you, you may want to consider the larger 5 Series.

Affordability

For the build quality and driving experience that the BMW 3 Series delivers, the model is decent value for money, and is in line with its rivals. You shouldn’t have to worry too much about depreciation with a 3 Series either, as it will always be popular.

Surprisingly, the entire 3 Series range is relatively efficient. Even turbocharged engines keep emissions to a minimum, so running costs are reasonable.

Interior

The interior of the BMW 3 Series has an upmarket feel, featuring high-quality materials and a solid finish. The dashboard is fairly minimalist, with a wide central console screen that comes as standard. Satnav, Bluetooth and DAB radio are also included.

Verdict

Fantastic driving, efficient engines and sophisticated aesthetics; what’s not to like? The BMW 3 Series has been acclaimed as one of the best executive cars time and time again for good reason, and while other models in its class may perform better in individual areas, such as dashboard layout or boot space, the 3 Series is an overall winning performer.
